Q Pootle 5, the friendly little alien who first appeared in the best-selling Q Pootle 5 - book coverbooks by the hugely popular children’s author and illustrator Nick Butterworth, has made the leap from page to screen. Creative and resourceful, Q Pootle 5 and his friends find fun and adventure wherever they go, with stories that will spark children’s imaginations everywhere! Q Pootle 5 will air weekdays at 8.15am on CBeebies from Monday 29th July.

Here Nick Butterworth explains the inspiration behind the series.

Where did Q Pootle 5 come from? Well, he sort of popped out of my pencil one day! I was doodling whilst musing about creating a new character for a children’s book and this friendly little alien just materialised!

The eventual books, Q Pootle 5 and Q Pootle 5 in Space proved very popular and there was early interest in turning the books into a TV series, but, for various reasons, it was not to be. Not until my son, Ben, made a radical suggestion.

‘We can do this,’ he said.

The ‘we’ was Ben and myself and my wife Annette. (Ben’s background is in film and TV and Annette, an English and drama teacher, turned writer, has been my business partner for . . . ever!) Ben’s idea was that we form a production company with a view to making the series ourselves.

It was daunting, but also very exciting. We formed Snapper Productions with the aim of turning Q Pootle 5 into a high quality children’s TV series. We knew what we wanted: fun characters with real personalities. Funny and engaging stories that would resonate with children and parents.

We had a lot to learn, on the hoof and very quickly. How would it be financed? Who would do the animation? Who would write fifty two episodes?! Who would broadcast the series?

Ben’s talents and his ‘can do’ attitude were a huge asset. He donned his producers hat and soon, we were meeting with all kinds of people, those we would need to collaborate with if our goal was to be realised.

I was given a ‘hat’ of my own. Two in fact! I’m not entirely sure what Executive Producer actually means! I do know what Series Designer means. It entails producing a huge number of drawings that set the style for characters, spaceships, backgrounds and all sorts of props, so that a small army of very talented people at our animators, Blue Zoo, can do their own magic and bring Q Pootle 5 and his friends to life.

Q Pootle 5 CBeebies

Because of the quirkiness of the world of Q Pootle 5, it was important for us to have the right creative partners. People who ‘got’ the ethos of the series. For children, especially preschool children, imagination trumps reality. My own grandson sat in a cardboard box in the garden for ages, recently, happily pretending to be flying a spaceship. In Q Pootle 5’s world there are echoes of this, where tin cans become rocket boosters, and hair dryers become lateral stabilising jets.

We have a small writing team who really understand the subtlety of this and it’s the same for all the other creative areas; actors voicing the characters, music and not least our animators, Blue Zoo, a British company who have produced a stunning quality of work.

And now, at last, we’re ready. Stand by Q Pootle 5. Stand by Oopsy, Groobie, Eddi Stella, Ray and Bud-D. Oh, and Planet Dave. We have lift off!
