Brave award winning mum Lindsay

Recently Netmums asked for their members to vote for their favourite pre-school classes for the Netmums awards and we were inundated with votes.  One of our winners sent us an incredibly moving response upon being told that she had won a bronze award, we asked her to share the story with you on our blog. Not only is it a moving story but it encapsulates the supportive spirit of Netmums and what can be achieved when a community of mums get together and help each other out.

A mum who was left unexpectedly widowed at the age of just 48 is smiling again after winning a top national award for her baby and toddler music classes.

Brave Lindsay Lucas was left devastated when her husband of 21 years, Trevor, died suddenly, leaving her to bring up their 12-year-old daughter alone.

Lindsay, of Stirchley, Birmingham had set up a thriving business running the Music With Mummy classes which teach parents to bond with their children through music.

However after Trevor’s death she felt unable to carry on.

But with the support of local mums who attended the classes, she slowly began teaching again – and 15 months on she has now scooped the bronze award for the best local pre-school class from national parenting site Netmums.

Lindsay said: “I am humbled and moved to have even been nominated for this prestigious award let alone come in the top three. When my husband died I couldn’t do anything for a few months as I struggled to come to terms with losing my soulmate and partner in everything. But the families who attended my classes were intensely loyal and when I set up classes again, tentatively at first, they returned.

“Sharing music and fun with small children has been so healing – their laughter and affection is a real lifeline. This bronze award has helped me to know that even in my weakness and as I struggle to work out my new identity, I can make a difference to people in the world around me and I am incredibly grateful to those mums who voted for me, but more than that – for standing by me in the most traumatic, challenging time of my life as a new, ‘young widow.’

“These families warm my heart and I want to thank them for their votes.”

Lindsay runs her Music With Mummy classes each weekday in both Stirchley and Harborne. Tens of thousands of mums voted in the awards which are the UK’s biggest parenting prize.

Local Netmums Editor Caroline Evason said: ‘All our nominated classes are winners in our eyes, but Lindsay’s classes are something special. The parents who nominated her  spoke so lovingly of the class and what a special bond Lindsay has with young children. We are delighted she’s been recognised nationally after all she has been through.”

Netmums founder Siobhan Freegard added: “Behind every pre-school class is a woman who loves children with a very special story to tell.  At Netmums we are all about support and the local community and our members wanted to tell us how special Lindsay is. We are delighted they have been able to support her through such a difficult time.”
