‘Muuuuum? Can I get a kitten?‘ Those dreaded words that most of us start hearing as our children grow older. It doesn’t have to be a scary thing though. Pets can be a wonderful addition to any family and that is why we were keen to grow the Netmums pets section. This new improved guide, re-launched this week with the help and support of TV Vet Marc Abraham is packed with information if you are just starting to think about a pet, want to get another one, want to know what to do if you are pregnant or how to cope with the death of a beloved pet. We’ve also got some rather lovely pet print off and colour in sheets that are great for the kids if you’re not quite ready to go for a real life bundle of fur just yet!
Marc says ‘I’m so excited to be working with Netmums. With so many young families owning pets, it’s a real pleasure to be able to help them decide not only which pet is suitable, but to also offer tips on how to care for them properly so they remain a happy and healthy family member!’
When discussing family pets, it struck the Netmums team just how much pets can help all children learn, including those with disabilities. Emma’s son is deaf and has ADHD and getting a dog (a lurcher rescue) has really helped him develop a sense of responsibilities and boundaries. They both have a best friend and someone to get a cuddle from when the world gets too much.
Niki says that she always thinks that a dog is there to help teach a child to love, Frances has learnt to type one handed as her cat insists on being rocked to sleep as she works at her computer and even Netmums founder Siobhan who started off not being a cat person now has 3 who overstayed their welcome on the way to being rehomed after being left in her garden in a carrier bag. She says they sleep on the beds, lie on the kids laps and are the laziest, sleepiest, luckiest kittykats on the planet.
Pets also teach children about the cycle of life and how to cope with death, although Nic says her memories of her new puppy digging up her old dog’s remains buried in a too shallow grave in the garden will stay with her forever. A valuable life lesson there – dig deeper! Netmums founder Sally also remembers how her childhood stick insect escaped and scared a would-be burglar and although we are not sure we would recommend them to guard your home, we do have suggestions for the best breeds of dogs to have if you have young children.
